2023 Undergraduate Research Experiences

2023 Undergraduate Research Experiences

Many undergraduate students choose to do research in mathematics, either through an Honors College thesis, URSA Engage, the College of Science SURE program, an REU program, or on a faculty member's research grant.

  • Three undergraduate students were mentored by Malgorzata Peszynska in 2023:
    • Joseph Carrigg (OSU URSA participant): “Albedo effects in the models of snow temperatures”
    • Nicholas Slugg (partially supported from NSF grant): “Numerical Implementation of Hysteresis in Permafrost Modeling”
    • Wylea Walker: “Modeling wild-fires and image analysis at the pore-scale.”
  • Madison Collins was advised by Elizabeth Jones, thesis entitled “Analysis of calculus curriculum implementation”.
  • Griffin Brandstetter was advised by Enrique A. Thomann, thesis entitled “Characterization of binary trees”.
  • Eric Schneider was advised by David J. Wing, thesis entitled “The Axiom of Choice and Homotopy Type Theory”.
  • Kerala Riley was advised by Mary Beisiegel, thesis entitled “Community Engagement in Mathematics through Outreach Programs”.

REU 2023 Students

REU 2023 students Zain Shields, Isabelle Hernandez, and Ling Chen.

  • REU advised by Holly Swisher: Mentored three REU students in number theory and combinatorics through her grant during summer 2023, including Isabelle Hernandez (center), an OSU student who is majoring in math and education. Isabelle is currently student teaching in a Lebanon high school.
