Undergraduate Student Life

Students sitting on field

Welcome to mathematics!

Being a math major at Oregon State University means being an integral part of a vibrant community of faculty, staff and students. Activities outside of class are for professional development, leadership opportunities and social interaction. We are proud of our many student clubs, as well as our students who participate in contests or outreach and engagement.

Join a student club

Clubs and student organizations are a great way to enrich your college experience, and as a mathematics student, you will have many options to explore! There are organizations devoted to helping you explore career options and attend professional networking events, clubs that help foster community for women mathematicians, as well as spaces for students to meet and explore their enthusiasm for math together.

Take part in a mathematics competition

The mathematics department at OSU sponsors undergraduate mathematics competitions for all students, math majors and non-majors. See below for details on each contest, including test dates, deadlines for registering, and sample problems. In all cases, participation will occur here at OSU.

Student resources

Oregon State provides numerous student resources, covering student well-being to career development and academic support.

Outreach and engagement

Many members of our department are enthusiastic about engaging in mathematics outside of OSU with the broader community. One of our goals is to develop positive attitudes towards mathematics by sharing our excitement via engaging mathematical activities. These activities can also highlight the social aspects of mathematical investigation. One of the best ways to do math is with a group of people. We are dedicated to communicating to as many humans as possible.

If you would like to talk to someone on our outreach team or would like to participate in an upcoming event we are already hosting - please contact us via email at outreach@math.oregonstate.edu.

Support for students of color and LGBTQ students

Trio Student Support Services (TRiO SSS) is a support program for undergraduate students that are first-generation, low-income, or have documented disabilities. The program provides academic counseling, tutoring and peer mentorship, social enrichment opportunities and more.

The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) is dedicated to increasing the number of traditionally underrepresented students successfully completing science, technology, engineering and mathematics baccalaureate degrees.

SOL: LGBTQ+ Multicultural Support is an inclusive, welcoming community with events, educational programming and student advocacy and support for queer/trans people of color.

Finding life balance

The College of Science strives to promote a healthy student community, especially among first-year students who may be struggling to find their place on campus. OSU offers many resources to help build a healthy community for its students, including outreach programs for a variety of college health issues. Many of the programs target the most common concerns and interests facing college students.

Remember that you are not alone! There are many people here to help.
