Undergraduate mathematics is more than just essential preparation for graduate study in the mathematical sciences, including pure and applied mathematics, statistics, and computer science. The problem solving and critical analysis skills you gain will help you excel in careers such as bio-mathematics, electrical engineering and actuarial science. In 2021, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicted that the number of jobs in data science would increase by 28% through 2026 - equal to roughly 11.5 million new jobs.

A foundational degree with endless possibilities

In the Department of Mathematics, you will be offered a diverse curriculum that can be tailored to your interests. Students pursuing a B.S. in mathematics will have the opportunity to choose one of four specialized options in mathematical biology, applied and computational mathematics, secondary teaching or statistics. We also offer a minor in actuarial science, which includes courses related to the actuarial and financial industry.

Opportunities in mathematics

As a mathematics student, you will have opportunities to explore learning and research in unique and exciting ways. You can explore a number of undergraduate research opportunities that allow you to conduct research in a professional setting, at Oregon State University or even abroad. One program, Budapest Semesters in Mathematics, sends mathematics students to Budapest where they receive instruction in English from esteemed Hungarian professors.
